Listen to the March 17th APRN audio coverage for more. Jeff King came in 2nd, Jet Backen came in 3rd place. Smyth, Iten, Boulding, Swenson and Brooks have all finished in that order

The Red Lantern holder came across the finish line bringing the 32nd Iditarod Sled Dog Race to an end. What an exciting and long race it was in 2004. The winds picked up in Nome after the leaders finished, leaving the rest of the pack with a true taste of the area. A total of 10 musher's and there teams scratched this year. The NOME WEBCAM at the finish line may be active all year. NOrmally you will see Front Street in Nome, and the daily town life. This town has a population of about 3,500. The Median income average per family here is about $68,000 and there is about 750 families living in the area. The population density is about 279/sq.mile and 51% of population is Native American. Jeff King won the coveted Millennium Hotel Anchorage First Musher to the Yukon Award

Buser claimed the GCI Dorothy G. Page Halfway Award of $3000 in Gold Nuggets and $4000 in cash back in Mc Grath!

We will miss Backen's lead dog Takk. Takk is the Norwegian dog that died suddenly on the 2004 trail. See more pictures of this team with Takk leading when Sorlie ran them last year in the 2003 section here. Robert Sorlie and Kjetil Backen alternate race years running dogs from the same kennel. They choose the best dogs they have each year, and Takk and Blue were the top picks. Apparently Takk was too good, he ran so hard that he made it to Valhalla. Robert Sorlie won the 2003 Iditarod with Takk and Blue, and in 2004 Kjetil Backen may well have won. This year its Sorlie's turn and the spotlight will be him. Personally, I like to watch Sorlie run and will be routing for him among other racers.
